Citizenship and democratic education and indoctrination

The Organic Law 3/2020, of December 29, amending Organic Law 2/2006, of May 3, on Education (LOE), contemplates the teaching of the subject "Education in civic and ethical values". This subject will pay special attention to ethical reflection and will include contents referring to the knowledge and respect for fundamental rights and the value of diversity, fostering a critical spirit and a culture of peace and non-violence. This paper reflects on the scope of democratic education with the purpose of highlighting some of the lessons that, in order to adequately develop and specify the contents of "Education in civic and ethical values", can be extracted from the previous experience of the subject "Education for citizenship and human rights".
