Treatment of a case of canine sarcoptic mange using fipronil

A 4-month-old male Yorkshire Terrier was presented Sor consultation for papulocrusty pruritic dermatosis that had been developing over the last Sew weeks. After having performed a large number of skin scrapings, a diagnosis of sarcoptic mange was arrived at. The animal,was then treated using fipronil only 3 rimes at 15 da intervals, the I-lose being 3 ml/kg. The patient's environment was also treated using a permethrin-based spray A check carried out 5 weeks later showed that both the lesions and pruritus had disappeared entirely, and no subsequent relapse was reported. The second section presents the other topical drugs and systemic agents currently used to treat this parasitic dermatosis. They are compared to this possible new option in therapy particular emphasis being laid not only on its advantages bur also on its drawbacks.
