Reducing greenhouse gas emissions from electricity supply in Australia

Some 85% of Australia's electricity generation is based on low-cost black and brown coal resulting in relatively high greenhouse gas emissions per unit of electricity produced. A range of government and industry initiatives are in place to abate emissions from electricity generation, but absolute reduction in emissions remains challenging at the current high electricity growth rate of more than 4% per year. The paper reviews greenhouse gas emissions from electricity supply and the steps being taken to reduce emissions.
