摘要
Recent advances in virtual reality (VR) and the increase in the power of modern computers has allowed for the rapid expansion of VR applications in industry. Virtual reality offers limitless possibilities in training, simulation and education. Although the minerals industry has been slow to invest in and use this advanced technology, the number of VR applications in the industry is increasing. VR has a great potential to increase productivity, better utilise time and most importantly improve safety awareness and therefore reduce incidents. The Advanced Computer Graphics and Virtual Reality in the Minerals Industry Research Unit (MineVR) at the University of Queensland, has recently been involved in developing VR applications for the minerals industry in conjunction with the various research centres. This paper describes the development of a VR training and simulation model of the CMTE's drill rig. The simulation will be used primarily in training operators, possible future developments include real-time production of results for given situations, and looking at linking the simulation to the actual drill in the laboratory. The simulation part of the model allows the user to turn the equipment on and off, operate it, and also identify some basic safety hazards that have been simulated around the rig.
