Relation of Waist-to-Hip Ratio to Body-Mass-Index in a sample of young Greek people

Body weight and body fat distribution are sexually dimorphic. The waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) has been associated with levels of circulating estrogens and testosterone, and with predisposition to cardiovascular incidents. The aim of this study was to investigate the relation of WHR to sex age and Body-Mass-Index (BMI), in a group of young Greek people. 30 males and 30 females aged 25-35 years participated in the study, BMI and WHR were assessed by recording body height and weight measuring waist and hip circumference, and calculating the relative ratios, The WHR was higher in men than women. There was a statistically significant correlation between WHR and BMI. Linear regression analysis showed a 0.014 increase of WHR for a 1 unit increase in BMI. WHR was found to be related to BMI, with a 1.74% increase in WHR for a one unit increase in BMI.
