Are fuel cells ready for prime time?

Fuel cells have the potential to provide power in many stationary applications-from households to large buildings to utility central stations. For nearly a decade, their developers have been promising to deliver these too-good-to-be true distributed generators that pollute less, run quieter, and generate more efficiently than today's gas and diesel engines. Despite all the hype, fuel cells remain an expensive enigma.
