Factors affecting ESL teachers using ICT in their classrooms

Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) has become a tool for facilitating many aspects of learning and teaching. However, not all teachers have shown a willingness to embrace the new technologies now available to them. This paper attempts to identify possible factors that affect teacher use of ICT in their lessons drawing from the experiences of a small number of Malaysian ESL (English as a second language) teachers. The findings on factors affecting the usage of ICT in teaching presented in this paper are part of the ongoing research. The evidence discussed in this paper was collected through interviews. The authors draw on Davis, Bagozzi and Warshaw' (1989) notions of 'action relating to reasons' (technology acceptance model) to frame the discussion about factors most likely to affect the use of ICT in relation to teaching and learning.
