UItrafine Ti(C,N) powder was synthesized by inorganic sol-gel and carbothermal-reduction; processing using TiO(OH)(2) and carbon black as starting materials. The thermodynamics of the process was analyzed. The effects of the ratio of raw materials, synthesizing temperature, holding time and the flow of N-2 on the composition of Ti(C,N) were investigated. Ti(C1-x,N-x) powder with x values of 0.2 similar to 0.7 and an average particle size less than 100nm can be obtained under proper conditions.
