The maximum efficiency of the internal combustion engine is yet to reach its full potential according to the Bosch Automotive Group. In a few years, a standard series car will be available in the compact-to-midsize range that can drive 78 mi on one U.S. gallon of fuel, says Rolf Leonhard, executive vice president of engineering at Bosch. He predicts that vehicles will maintain an average weight of 1,200 kg 2,640 lb, comparable to todays vehicles, while CO2 emissions will be cut to an average of 70 gkm, a sharp decline from the 182 gkm average of today [1] Figure 1. © 2006 IEEE.
