A review of Singapore contractors' attitudes to environmental sustainability

Noting the Singapore government and its construction industry's efforts and progress in addressing environmental issues, this article reviews Singapore general contractors' current attitudes to environmental sustainability. On the basis of interview data and firms' archival records, the results show that the majority of the responding large-and medium-sized contractors positively embrace the idea of sustainability. The identified drivers of change support that the government and clients continue to play their important roles in leading the construction firms to improve their environmental management performance. A binary logistic regression model was also developed by relating the contractors' attitudes to (i) firm size and (ii) type of ownership. The results show that the contractors' attitudes were found to be significantly affected by firm size and type of ownership, with the large non-family-owned construction firms being most likely to show positive attitudes to environmental sustainability.
