First solar neutrino observations at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory

We present here the first observations of solar neutrinos from the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. SNO is a water Cerenkov detector which uses heavy water (D2O) as both the interaction and detection medium, providing sensitivity both to charged-current (exclusive v(e)) and neutral current (inclusive for all active flavors) reactions. Based upon the radial distribution of events in the detector, the angular distribution of the events with respect to the Sun, and the energy distribution, we conclude that SNO is seeing B-8 solar neutrinos via the charged current reaction on deuterium.
