A case study on conversion of R12 compressor for R134a refrigerant application and compensating the loss of performance due to conversion

In this paper we present a case study on the design changes carried out to retain the performance of a compressor after conversion to a R134a application. Study of volumetric and Isentropic efficiency, suction and discharge gas path flow and motor efficiency were done and experiments conducted to improve these. This modification has resulted in getting the same cooling capacity as that of the R12 compressor for same the displacement and better efficiency (EER).
