摘要
The influence of web openings on the fundamental structural behaviour of Rectangular Hollow Sections is introduced. The results of small scale tests on specimens in torsion and the development of analytical finite element models to predict behaviour are summarised allowing far the effect of single and multiple holes of various diameters and spacing placed symmetrically and asymmetrically. The finite element work has confirmed the experimental results in relation to stiffness, ultimate capacity and failure modes. This paper shows that torsion, bending and shear are inherently linked by asymmetry and geometric nonlinearity, even in simple torsion tests. The research is applicable to any field of engineering where it is advantageous to cut holes in the webs of load bearing hollow rectangular steel sections, although the primary aim is to develop a set of design rules far Rectangular Hollow Section Slim Floor edge beams with web openings.
