Analysis of FAD Adaptive Function in the Management of the Sea Fishery Resource Utilization of Mandar Fishermen in West Sulawesi, Indonesia

This article aimed to analysis the adaptive function of Fish Aggregation Device (FAD)-'Rumpon' in Indonesian Term-in managing the utilization of deep sea fishery resources maintained by Mandar Fishermen in West Sulawesi since (over) hundred years ago. The article uses the data of the on going field research " Mandar FAD: Analysis of Adaptive Function of FAD in wisely managing the Utilization of Sea Fishery Resource in West Sulawesi" (Scheme of Specific Maritime Continent, the Research Center of Hasanuddin University has, 2016). The study applied ethnographic method by using in-depth interview and observation for data collection. Through adaptive strategic approach of anthropology of fishing, the adaptive socio-cultural functions of FAD will be analyzed in two related main themes: (1) the ownership sign of fish catching areas over the sea, and (2) the evenly distribution of fishermen access to the use of fishery resource (social-economy) having a positive consequence on the maintenance of social integration of Mandar Fishermen communities in general. The assumption built on by maintaining the adaptive socio-cultural functions of FAD dynamically, the Mandar fishermen communities in West Sulawesi could existed and yet persistence since hundreds years ago up to the present and the future.
