A perspective on wireless networks for education

This paper discusses how wireless computer networks may be used in schools, both K-12 and colleges, to improve the quality of education. It relates schools' reasons for installing computer networks, including a drive for increased authenticity in education, and mentions their options of installing wired or wireless networks. The ease of installation and flexibility in physical resource allocation and instructional design of wireless networks, along with the educational benefits they offer to students, make them a viable choice for schools. The paper explains the educational needs and requirements for wireless networks. New developments like mobile computer labs are discussed. The most criticized feature of wireless networks, security, is examined; and ways of improving security are discussed. The conclusion of the paper is that the disadvantages of wireless networks are outweighed by their educational and cost advantages. In most circumstances wireless networks can provide a superior educational environment.
