Modelling of electromagnetic brake and its influence on bubble entrapment

A numerical model has been developed for optimisation of the electromagnetic brake (EMBR) in Hoogovens' BOS No. 2. This model describes the fluid flow in the mould under the influence of argon injection and electromagnetic forces of the EMBR. In addition the model calculates the entrapment of argon bubbles in the solidifying shell. The behaviour of argon bubbles in the mould has been investigated using the model and related to the quality of the slabs. A good agreement between model calculations and the observed contamination of the slabs has been found, which proves that the numerical model is an excellent tool in optimising EMBR performance.
