Firm-Level Resources and R&D Investments: Evidence from Small Chinese High-Tech Firms

摘要
This study draws on resource-based view (RBV) to investigate the impact of firm-level resources on its innovation performance measured by R&D investment (RDI). Both tangible and intangible resources were identified, and examined with hypotheses, using quantitative data gathered via a survey instrument with 2025 samples of small high-tech firms in the Zhejiang Province, China. Our findings largely support our framework. The findings clearly confirm the relevant role of resources in small firms' R&D, and lead to a greater understanding of small firm's RDIs in China at the firm level. It also provides unique insights which could be used as feedback to fine-tune an implementation strategy to encourage small firms' innovation in countries similar to China.
