Indicators of sustainable management of French forests: Implementation of forest inventory maps and GIS

In 1994, the French Ministry of Agriculture carried out a large study to define and produce a list of indicators for the sustainable management of French forests, at a country-wide scale. Among the agencies that produced data, the IFN (Inventaire Forestier National, i.e. National Forest Inventory) computed a large set of indicators, deriving both from its mensuration database and from its GIS. One of the most relevant result of the study is the assessment of the division of the forested area into basic forest units : IFN's geographical database revealed that French forest, which covers 143,000 km(2), can be found mainly in large forest units (more than 100,000 hectares).
