Guillain-Barre Syndrome in a Patient with a Renal Carcinoma - a Case Report

Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is an acute autoimmune polyradiculoneuropathy with a monophasic course, the development of which takes a maximum of four weeks. Relapse is rare (approximately 3% of cases). As opposed to chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), where a link to lymphoma and certain other malignancies has been described, linkage of GBS to cancer is questionable. Nevertheless, several cases occur in the literature describing the occurrence of GBS in patients with malignancies. This case report covers a patient with renal carcinoma who presented with GBS, and possible linkage to malignancy is discussed.
