Myiasis caused by Wohlfahrtia magnifica. Review article

Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) is also the major species of wound myiasis in Hungary. The knowledge of biology, geographical distribution, incidence, economic and public health importance as well as treatment and control of this flylarval infestation, called wohlfahrtiosis has been summarized in this review article. Although this disease condition was observed in many animal species, sheep, mainly imported breeds seem to be the most susceptible to wohlfahrtiosis that is also demonstrated in the author's photos. Regarding the treatment of infested animals, several insecticides can be used, however, the larvicide effect is not accompanied by the protection of the affected area against reinfection. Various investigations are needed to confirm the effectiveness and practicability of chemical treatment of healthy animals with repellent and/or larvicid preparations, trapping of female flies and immunization of sheep for prevention.
