Special Issue on Artificial Intelligence in Design

A special issue of the Journal of Computing and Information Science in Engineering focuses on the topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Design. The topic attracted about 40 submissions with more than a hundred co-authors. Research into knowledge-based design attended to several closely related issues that were classified into a number of categories, including uses of knowledge in design, content and representation of knowledge, and organization and access of knowledge in memory. Research on knowledge-based design also addressed methodological issues, such as the empirical basis and epistemological foundations of design theories and the measures and metrics for evaluating design techniques and decisions. Ten of the 14 papers in this special issue were also classified into three main categories, such as functional decompositions of designs, evolutionary computing in design, and communication of design knowledge.
