The defense mechanisms of 23 patients with personality disorders and 15 patients with neurotic disorders were compared. In the Defense Mechanisms Inventory the reversal scale score, including repressive mechanisms of repression, denial and reaction formation was significantly higher in the neurotic group (p < .02). The results of the Defense Style Questionnaire suggest that projection (p < .05) devaluation (p < 0.6), and isolation (p < .07) are observed more often in personality disorders; whereas, sublimation is observed more often in neuroses (p < .05). This preliminary study indicates that the defense mechanisms questionnaires may be applied as helpful diagnostic tools.
