The lichen genus Solorina Ach. (Peltigeraceae, lichenized ascomycotina) in New Zealand

The lichen genus Solorina Ach., occurs very rarely in, the Southern Hemisphere. Two bipolar species grow in tundra vegetation on the mountains of South Island, New Zealand; the calcicole S. spongiosa, has a very restricted occurrence on calcareous soils in Nelson and Fiordland, while the more widely distributed S. crocea is a rather local component of high-alpine vegetation in the schist, and greywacke mountains of Nelson, Canterbury and Otago, east of the Main Divide. Neither species is known from similar habitats in either Australia or continental South America. Details of morphology, chemistry, and habitat ecology are given for both species and their distributions in New Zealand are mapped.
