This paper summarizes the objectives and so-far achievements of the Nordic four-year research project on nuclear reactor safety, NKS/SOS-2. The objective of the project is to obtain a shared Nordic view in regard of key safety issues pertaining to the operating nuclear power plants in Finland and Sweden. Main issues are the safety of the reactors as designed and operated, safety of the reactors as maintained and modified, and mitigation of severe reactor accidents. The project is divided into three sub-projects; Safety Development, Management of Plant Maintenance and Renewal, and Severe Accidents. The paper concentrates mainly oil the achievements within the sub-project Safety Development, but some topics related to tho maintenance management are also covered.
