This paper presents use of reconfigurable microstrip patch antenna elements in adaptive arrays. Adaptive antenna systems are referred to smart antennas. The combination of both reconfigurability and adaptivity in a single array is investigated in this study. For this purpose a dual-band inset-fed reconfigurable antenna is designed. The switching between the different frequency bands is achieved by using capacitive series RF-MEMS switches. On the second phase of the study, the designed reconfigurable antenna is used as a single element in smart antenna. Four element linear array performance is investigated and simulated.
