Annealing recovery of neutron irradiated LiNbO3:Hf single crystals

Hf-doped LiNbO3 single crystals were irradiated with thermal neutrons to a fluence of 4 x 10(16) n/cm(2) and characterized by Rutherford Backscattering and Perturbed Angular Correlation (PAC) Spectroscopy after irradiation and after several annealing treatments. In crystals where I-If occupied both Li and Nb sites, the fraction in Nb sites is strongly reduced after irradiation as a result of the recoil induced by the (n, gamma) reaction with Hf. Annealing at 700 degrees C restored the initial distribution. The results are discussed in the framework of the Li and Nb vacancy models proposed in the literature for the defect structure of LiNbO3.
