Successful, Combined Long-term Treatment of Cerebral Candidiasis and Aspergillosis in a Liver Transplant Recipient: A Case Report

Invasive fungal infections, of which the most common are candidiasis and aspergillosis, are among the most important and fatal complications in solid organ transplantation. They continue to be a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) because of the poor CNS penetration of antifungal medications. Voriconazole yields fungicidal drug concentrations in the CNS, but its use is limited in solid organ transplant patients because of its metabolic interactions with immunosuppression. Here we report a case of invasive fungal infection in the CNS after an emergency liver transplantation due to hepatitis B virus-related acute liver failure. The patient was managed successfully with a longterm conservative medical treatment.
