An experimental and 2-D numerical analysis of the thermal-hydraulic characteristics of the converging-diverging tube

Airflow and heat transfer in converging-diverging tubes are studied experimentally and numerically. For a fixed tube diameter (50mm), rib height (2.5mm) and space (28mm), three types of converging-diverging tubes with different length ratio of the converging and diverging sections and their joint ways have been investigated for different value of inlet velocity ranging from 5similar to15m/s. The experimental results indicate that the heat transfer is enhanced when the lengths of converging section increases to maximums. A 3%similar to13% increase of Nusselt number is observed and a 6%similar to46% increase of pressure drop is seen for the developed tube jointed linearly (DTL). Also a 1.5%similar to6% increase of Nusselt number is observed and a 46% increase of pressure drop is seen for the developed tube jointed convexly (DTC). 2-D numerical results of a turbulent model are compared with the experimental data.
