Terahertz optics in strongly correlated electron systems

Exotic materials with strongly correlated electron systems (SCES) are of considerable interest to researchers engaged in fundamental and practical studies, owing to their versatile electronic, magnetic, and optical properties. Examples of these properties include the high-temperature (high-Tc) superconductivity observed in cuprates and the colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) observed in manganites. In this chapter, we review the terahertz (THz) optics of SCES, whose studies can be broadly categorized as ones using the illumination of femtosecond optical pulses to produce THz radiation from high-Tc superconductors and CMR manganites and THz time-domain spectroscopic studies of these materials. We mainly concentrate on showing the salient optical properties at THz frequencies.
