The ability to transfect and express foreign genes in cultured cells and Xenopus oocytes has contributed immensely to our knowledge of drug-receptor interactions and signal transduction following receptor activation. These techniques are now being used to study acute and chronic effects of ethanol on neurotransmitter receptors and cellular signaling. This article reviews the use of transfected cells to study ethanol actions on the GABA(A) receptor.
