摘要
A single smart card is now capable of providing multiple applications, including stored value, open online Point-of-Sale (POS), credit card facilities, building access, etc. Cards with these capabilities are currently undergoing large-scale trials internationally. It should be recognised that smart card based implementations must include not only the integral hardware and software but also the associated infrastructure for data communications, financial transaction processing, etc, coupled with the social, legislative and ethical constraints. The size and complexity of such infrastructures must not be underestimated as they provide the platform for millions of dollars of financial transactions on an international basis. In effect, substantial cross-disciplinary knowledge is needed in the design of such systems. It is noted that smart card technology is a relatively new and interdisciplinary field and not well represented in engineering education within Australia. This paper presents an overview of smart card technologies and their applications. Furthermore, recommendations are given regarding the use of smart card technologies as a simple, low-cost device that may be used for both introductory and advanced multi-disciplinary courses for engineering education.
