Anti-doping Control in the Third Millennium:: no more "invisible" substances?

This brief review outlines the main characteristics of World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accredited laboratories and examines recent changes in response to international regulations. The development of international standard prohibited lists is sketched, as well as the detection methods and techniques used by accredited laboratories. The article focuses on present and future challenges posed by new generation doping agents, specifically the problem of substances that are "invisible" at antidoping screening, and on efficacious strategies that can ensure rapid, reliable detection by accredited laboratories.
