My paper deals with the relation between metre and nation, presuming metric systems as strategies of cultural policy to found and establish traditions of national literature. From this perspective, I will discuss two cases as an example: Tiecks Minnelieder (1803) and the debate on the hexameter in the English-speaking area in the early 19th century.
