An overview of cutaneous laser resurfacing

The introduction of high energy-pulsed carbon dioxide and erbium lasers in the mid-1990s have revolutionized cutaneous resurfacing with over 150,000 procedures performed annually in North America. These laser systems can successfully treat wrinkled and dyschromic photodamaged skin and improve the appearance of atrophic scars. Newer laser and electrosurgical techniques have been developed recently that compete with the ablative carbon dioxide and erbium lasers while minimizing side effects and shortening recovery times. These different resurfacing devices are contrasted, addressing the specific advantages and disadvantages of each.
