摘要
This paper aims to argue that two orphans, named Verney and Adrian, in Mary Shelley's The Last Man are atheists who don't believe in Christianity, distinguished from most of the other orphans who are faithful Christian in British factual records and novels in the 18th-19th centuries. This paper further argues that by constructing these two special orphans, Mary Shelley's true intention was to critique the side effect of Christianity in killing individual consciousness which she was eager to awaken in the modern individual.
