A Study on the Formation of Eugene O'Neill's Spiritual Ecology

With the popularity of ecocriticism, it is a new trend to conduct research on drama. As a founder of American drama, Eugene O'Neill has been ranked with the greatest playwright with tragic mind. So it is of great significance to study O'Neill's tragedies from the perspective of spiritual ecology. This paper intends to explore O'Neill's spiritual ecology from three aspects: his social background and personal experience, the inheritance of traditional western and eastern philosophy and the social function and nature of tragedy. With strong spiritual ecology, O'Neill not only innovates American national drama, but also maintains a balance of people's spiritual home.
