Science has advanced dramatically in recent years and with the proliferation of academic journals the amount of material to be read and absorbed in any field has grown to the point where few, if any, can keep up with it all. In all of this, the rise of the power of mathematics to influence much thought in the sciences - both physical and other - has proceeded rapidly, no doubt in part due to so many being wary of mathematics and mathematicians. Here the problem is assessed and the true toll of mathematics in the formulation of scientific theories is defined.
