Chondrosarcoma of the first phalanx of a toe:: a case report

Chondrosarcoma of the toe is uncommon. The few cases reported in the literature have usually developed secondary to a solitary enchondroma. We report a case of grade II chondrosarcoma of the second toe in a young woman. The patient is currently disease free 4.5 years after radical surgery. We present here the results of the diagnostic and extension work-up in our case and in cases reported in the literature. Histological diagnosis is particularly difficult in low-grade tumors emphasizing the importance of the clinical course for diagnosis. Appropriate treatment is wide resection to healthy tissue, giving the best chances for cure. Recurrence and metastatic dissemination depend on the tumor grade and adequate treatment.
