Transferring APL technology to industry

By all accounts APL has been transferring technology for decades, but it was a 1998 strategic plan that laid the groundwork for a formal program. The Office of Technology Transfer was created in July 1999 to manage APL's portfolio of more than 400 inventions, many of which have emerged from the Laboratory's long history in space science. At a rate of three new inventions per week, APL is well positioned to impact local and national economies. Early successes in licensing and creating start-up companies around select space technologies, among others, signal APL's formal entry into the arena of technology transfer for commercial applications.
