All providers of vocational education and training should have a strategy for including environmental education throughout all programmes, in order to contribute to the challenge of ensuring global sustainable development throughout the 21st century. This paper illustrates the development of a widely applicable curriculum unit of environmental education for sustainability, for environmental protection. The Unit comprises five generic general learning outcomes together with related more specific outcomes. Development of the Unit involved drawing on the experience of teachers of a range of vocational programmes, and articulating with views on the aims of environmental education and the growing emphasis on the importance of environmental responsibility. The Unit could be implemented as a self-standing curriculum, but more desirably the outcomes integrated into vocational programmes.
