This paper deals with electrical pre-breakdown phenomena and electrical insulating performance of vacuum, gas, solid, and composite insulators under cryogenic operating conditions of superconducting apparatus including the quenching phenomena. The described phenomena and characteristics may be useful for insulation design and high-voltage testing of superconducting power apparatus. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
