The evaluation of a web browser for blind people

A study was conducted to check the compliance of 348 web sites with W3C WCAG guidelines as implemented by the automated assessment tool Bobby. Overall 79% of sites failed these guidelines. The sites were also checked for use of HTML accessibility functions (used on a small percentage of sites) and potentially inaccessible content (widely prevalent). The usability of the sites was then assessed by the WebbIE web browser, which indicated that the major functionality of the websites was usable in 92.8% of cases. The relationship between the usability and accessibility of websites for blind people is discussed.
