Performance comparison of the gray T3E/512 and the NEC SX-4/32 for a parallel CFD-code based on message passing

摘要
In this paper the performance of supercomputers is compared from an engineering point of view. The code being chosen for the comparison is the portable MPI version of a simulation code for the prediction of turbulent reactive flows in full-scale, coal-fired utility boilers. Although the parallel code uses the message passing programming model the vectorisation capabilities of the data structure are completely retained. With the most appropriate solution algorithms and methods on each architecture the numerical efficiency of the computations is unchanged while making the best use of the different. hardware capabilities. Accordingly the comparison based on the parallel efficiency is sufficient to describe the performance results. For the analysis two discretisations of a utility boiler using a coarse and a fine grid have been chosen as test cases. The comparison shows the good performance of the MPI code, which is of equal value on shared-memory and on distributed-memory parallel computers.
