摘要：
Bipolar affective disorder is a lifelong condition with profound effects on sufferers' social and occupational life. Carbamazepine and valproate have become established as alternative and adjunctive treatments to lithium as mood-stabilizing therapy in bipolar disorder. Despite these advances, treatment resistance persists. Lamotrigine, a new anticonvulsant, is increasingly being used in treatment-resistant cases under specialist supervision. Further pharmacological and non-pharmacological developments are currently under investigation.
