Ernst Junger assault on the canon

The aim of this essay is to explore a process of literary canonization. In this respect, Ernst Junger's career is a good example, as it stretches between his initial position belonging to the local canon of German nationalist prose and his later determination to obtain admission into the canon of universal literature. This essay analyzes the means used by Junger and his critics to effect the transition, and it also seeks to throw light on the political background behind the attempt.
