Complex decision support using advanced availability modelling techniques

A key reason for carrying out availability modelling on oil and gas production facilities is to inform risk based decisions in an extremely competitive and challenging market. Availability modelling is an essential tool to enable informed design, commercial, operational and maintenance decisions to be made. The ever increasing complexities associated with such facilities require functionality advancements beyond the more traditional RAM modelling using Monte Carlo simulation. This paper describes such enhancements and details how these advanced availability modelling techniques have been used to target areas of improvement for a water injection system on an offshore oil production platform and to enable an informed decision on the mode of operation of an onshore gas pipeline. In addition, case studies of the benefits of advanced availability modelling in the water and electricity industries are also provided.
