Time and Frequency Transfer Over an Electronically Compensated Fiber Link

Recently there has been great effort devoted to frequency transfer over optical fibers. Compensated optical fiber links have shown the best performance for transferring high quality frequencies over long distances. In this paper, we report on expanding this scheme to send a stable phase in addition to a stable frequency over an electronically compensated fiber link. We construct an optical fiber link that transfers a stable microwave tone. We then use the pre-distorted broadcast local oscillator to generate a 1 pulse-per-second (1 PPS) signal that is transferred down the link at the same time. In a laboratory environment, phase excursions of over 10 ns were induced and compensated on a 20 km link. Uncompensated and compensated results will be presented for both the transferred 1 PPS signal and the microwave tone.
