Richard Goodwin (Fig. 1) was the quintessential vintage economist. The economic theories he developed emanated from the vintage contributors to the subject: Ricardo, Malthus, Marx, Schumpeter, Keynes and Harrod. The mathematical tools that he harnessed, to formalize his economic theories, originated in the vintage contributions of Poincare, Courant-Hilbert, van der Pol and Le Corbeiller. In this paper an attempt is made to survey and summarize Goodwin's intellectual legacy - as a theorist and as an innovative teacher. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
