Intraoral distraction osteogenesis for bone transport in mandibular reconstruction

In this retrospective study 16 patients underwent bi-focal, three-focal or tetra-focal bone transport after major mandibular resection including the symphyseal area. The mandibles were reconstructed creating 12.5 to 16.3 cm of new healthy bone and soft tissues, the bone and gingival structures in terms of quantity and quality were recreated progressively from the neighboring tissues. Adequate height and width of the new tissues was achieved, creating a fine architecture for dental implants. This four year follow-up study demonstrates the stability and excellent clinical results of intraoral distraction osteogenesis to reconstruct large defects after partial or complete body mandibular resections.
