On the Tubular Look of Qipao in the Mid-late Years of 1920s

This paper focus on the tubular look of Qipao in the mid-late years of 1920s through an examination of examples of Qipao's silhouette, pattern, collocation and style as seen in historical materials. The discussion aims to demonstrate issues related to historical reason why tubular look are popular in 1920s and social background by comparing Qipao with western mainstream lady's garment from the same time. The tubular look of Qipao comes from more complex reasons compared to the west including the influence of western mainstream fashion and the legacy of traditional custom which generated the peculiar tubular look in the history of Chinese Qipao.
